On 12 May, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) - an official campaign partner of the Healthy Workplaces Campaign (HWC) 2023-25 'Safe and healthy work in the digital age', hosted a webinar exploring the growing impact of digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI) on occupational safety and health (OSH). The event was held in collaboration with the European Network of Safety and Health Professional Organisations (ENSHPO), also a campaign partner, along with several expert contributors.

The webinar convened OSH professionals, researchers, trade union representatives and policy stakeholders to discuss how emerging digital technologies are changing the world of work and what this means for worker protection. Topics included the increasing use of AI in workplace surveillance, task allocation and risk management, as well as the effects of algorithmic decision-making and digital platforms on physical and mental wellbeing.

Speakers stressed that, while digital tools can help improve workplace safety and efficiency, they also raise new challenges. These include reduced worker autonomy, heightened psychosocial risks and the need for transparency and accountability in the use of AI. The discussions underscored the importance of involving OSH professionals early when introducing new technologies and ensuring that ethical, worker-focused design principles are prioritised.

The webinar also examined recent developments in EU policy and regulation, calling for stronger cross-sector collaboration to ensure that OSH frameworks keep pace with innovation. A key takeaway was the need to equip OSH practitioners with the skills and knowledge required to assess and manage AI-related risks effectively.
