Safety in chemical work: Preparing the new generation of Greek engineers for healthy workplaces

The Hellenic Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, our focal point in Greece, is hosting a seminar for students and academic staff of the Physical Chemistry Laboratory at the Aristoteleio University of Thessaloniki focusing on occupational safety and health (OSH) in the digital era. Organised as part of the European Week for Safety and Health at Work, the event aims to strengthen knowledge on digitalisation, prevention and risk assessment.

The programme introduces the basic principles of OSH, the national legislative framework and EU-OSHA’s ‘Safe and healthy work in the digital age’ campaign. Sessions explore digital technologies and smart systems that support OSH while addressing issues such as sedentary work, psychosocial risks and thermal stress.

A special focus is placed on the safe management of dangerous substances such as carcinogens and mutagens, especially relevant to the participants’ field. Presentations provide practical guidance on assessment methods and the Roadmap on Carcinogens initiative. Participants also learn about EU-OSHA’s Workers’ exposure survey on cancer risk factors in Europe (WES) and its contribution to tackling occupational cancer in Europe.

The seminar concludes with a workshop on Online interactive Risk Assessment (OiRA) tools for conducting workplace risk assessments, with a focus on chemical hazards. Napo films complement the training by offering an engaging introduction to risk prevention. An open discussion between students, professors and the Greek focal point serves to develop future OiRA tools for enterprises in the country.
