New insight into platform workers’ subjective constructions of fairness of online labour platforms

A new article by Jere Immonen and Laura Seppänen from the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, examines how variations in online labour platform operations and social dynamics shape workers’ perceptions of fairness and the norms they use to evaluate the fairness of the platform practices. 

These perceptions may arise from different forms of platform control as well as the heterogeneity of workers’ backgrounds and needs. According to the study, some platform workers embrace the capitalist ideal of individual entrepreneurship, while others expect online labour platforms to assume broader responsibilities for workers.
