This year, on 11th February, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science centres around the essential role of women and girls in science and their contribution to the achievement of sustainable development goals.

A significant gender gap has persisted throughout the years at all levels of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines all over the world. Even though women  have achieved parity in higher education and females in research keep growing, based on UNESCO studies, they are still under-represented in these fields. 

For example, in cutting edge areas such as artificial intelligence, only one in five professionals (22%) is a woman. 

Ensuring girls and women inspired by STEM pursue their dream, develop their talents, and spark change also requires an environment that promotes respect, safety and health. 

A cross-cutting priority of EU-OSHA’s 2023–2025 campaign Safe and healthy work in the digital age is to consider the gender dimension and the impact of digitalisation on workforce diversity and on groups of vulnerable workers.
