The digital revolution is transforming education, with artificial intelligence (AI) playing a central role in this change. But what does this mean for the wellbeing of teachers, academics, and other education professionals? Through its ‘Balancing AI in EDU’ project, the European Trade Union Committee for Education (ETUCE), an official campaign partner of the Healthy Workplaces Campaign (HWC) 2023-25 'Safe and healthy work in the digital age', is aiming to assess the AI’s potential effects on the sector, addressing concerns such as increased workloads, changes to job roles, and privacy risks.

As part of its activities, the initiative includes thorough research into existing AI policies. A mid-term conference is set to be held in Copenhagen on 7-8 October 2025, bringing together education trade unions, policymakers, and experts to discuss research findings and examine AI's impact on occupational safety and health in line with the HWC. In 2026, two thematic training workshops are foreseen to equip education trade unions with practical skills to enhance their role in collective bargaining and policy advocacy on AI-related issues.

To support long-term engagement, ETUCE will develop a Guide for Education Trade Unions, outlining strategies for addressing AI-related challenges in the workplace. Additionally, the ETUCE Digi&AI Platform will serve as a resource hub, facilitating knowledge-sharing and collaboration among education trade unions across Europe.
