EU-OSHA’s media partner, HSE+, has recently covered an article by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH), the Agency’s National Focal Point, examining workers’ perceptions of fairness in online labour platform practices.

The study, published in the Bristol University Press online journal, draws on interviews with Finnish delivery workers and professionals active on online platforms. It explores how platform workers view fairness, regulation, and the balance between autonomy and control. Some embrace entrepreneurial freedom, while others call for greater responsibility from platforms, highlighting the tension between flexibility and the need for stronger labour protections.

By focusing on issues such as algorithmic control, income security, and workers’ rights, the study sheds light on the ethical and regulatory challenges of digital platform work, which is one of the priority areas of the current Healthy Workplaces Campaign (HWC) 2023-25 'Safe and healthy work in the digital age'.
