Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), an official campaign partner of the Healthy Workplaces Campaign (HWC) 2023-25 'Safe and healthy work in the digital age', is set to bring its urgent call for reform in the gig and platform economy to the heart of UK policymaking. On 7 May, MPs and key stakeholders will gather at the Houses of Parliament for an event based on IOSH’s newly published white paper ‘A platform for success. How we can build a better future in the gig economy’.

With 1.7 million people in the UK working in the gig economy - 20% of whom rely on it as their main source of income - IOSH warns that poor occupational safety and health (OSH) conditions put workers at risk. Many face unpredictable hours, lack of basic facilities, and issues ranging from physical strain to isolation. As the sector is expected to grow 300% by 2027, IOSH urges the UK government to act now to ensure safe and fair working conditions.

The white paper outlines nine key actions, including better enforcement of OSH protections, alternatives to zero-hour contracts, and stronger legal rights for gig workers. IOSH’s event will push for these vital changes, urging policymakers to shape a future where flexible work does not come at the cost of worker wellbeing.
