The latest edition of Reputation Today, EU-OSHA’s media partner, takes a closer look at the challenges young people face in a digital world. Aligned with the Healthy Workplaces Campaign (HWC) 2023-25 'Safe and healthy work in the digital age', the magazine explores issues such as cyberviolence, burnout, and digital overload, drawing on insights from the recent European Survey of Enterprises on New and Emerging Risks (ESENER).

Among the key topics explored is the growing problem of bullying and, notably, cyberbullying in schools. While certain laws promote shared responsibility among students, parents, and institutions, teachers remain on the front lines of prevention. Alongside the emotional strain of managing complex student relationships, many teachers face verbal abuse, including from parents, and the pressure to constantly adapt to evolving digital tools. These difficulties are taking a toll: burnout, now officially recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an occupational syndrome, is increasingly common among teaching staff. The OSHwiki article on cyberviolence by third parties echoes these concerns, stressing the need for clear workplace policies to protect teachers’ safety and digital privacy. Schools, after all, are workplaces and must meet the same legal standards for safety and health as any other sector.

At the broader workplace level, the 2024 ESENER reveals that 43% of companies now assess digital technology as part of their risk profiles, bringing attention to challenges such as information overload (32%), intensified work rhythms (34%), and prolonged screen use (54%). Yet, many organisations still face barriers in managing these psychosocial risks - often due to a lack of awareness or training. The findings call for greater integration of mental wellbeing strategies into digital transformation plans, alongside employee engagement and tailored prevention policies.
