Food delivery couriers working for digital platforms face working conditions detrimental to their long-term health

For the past 15 years, digital service platforms have gained increasing influence in France and across the world. As demand increases, workers gravitate towards this industry, despite its harsh working conditions but at what cost?

The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) has recently released a report assessing the health risks that digital service platforms delivery couriers face. The report has found them to be at risk of short to long-term negative impacts on both their mental and physical health. This includes sleep disorders as well as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

The use of algorithmic management presents one of the greatest risk factors. Indeed, according to ANSES, its widespread use by digital service platforms generates an unfair, unbalanced and unstable working arrangement for food delivery couriers. Self-employment and intense physical activity in urban environments are also to blame.

In its report, ANSES provides three recommendations, including making mandatory the application of the health and safety provisions set out for employees in the French Labour Code for food delivery couriers.
