Harassment and violence

Harassment, sexual harassment and violence in the workplace are abusive behaviours that can impact a person’s mental and physical health, and overall wellbeing.

These behaviours can take on different forms, from an isolated act of physical violence to repeated actions that threaten, intimidate, demean or humiliate one or more workers. These may occur between coworkers or caused by individuals outside the organisation, like customers and clients, as reported by 56 % of organisations (ESENER, 2024). In addition to these behaviours, cyberviolence and cyber harassment may also happen in the workplace, exacerbated by the ubiquitous use of digital tools.

Another important issue is sexual harassment at work. This may encompass both verbal and non-verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. Whilst anyone can fall victim of this type of harassment, women are disproportionally affected as one in three have experienced sexual harassment at work.
