EU employment and social affairs ministers have confirmed the deal reached between the EU Council and the EU Parliament on new directive to improve working conditions for more than 28 million platform workers across the EU. This EU legal act aims to help determining the correct employment status of people working for digital platforms (currently, at least 5.5 million of these workers may be wrongly classified as self-employed) and regulate the use of algorithms by digital labour platforms.

The agreement, which was proposed by the European Commission in December 2021, has been reached thanks to the joined effort and involvement of the European Council´s Belgian and Spanish Presidencies, the European Parliament and the European Commission. 

Digital platform work is the first priority area of EU-OSHA’s Healthy Workplaces Campaign 'Safe and healthy work in the digital age'. The campaign highlights opportunities, such as flexibility and autonomy for workers and employment options for those who have difficulties in accessing the labour market. However, it also considers occupational safety and health risks and challenges, for example algorithmic management, working in isolation, or little control over workload. It also presents policy initiatives to prevent risks related to digital platform work.
