Spanish partners explore artificial intelligence at work as part of the European Week

As part of European Week for Safety and Health at Work 2024, Instituto Nacional de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo, our focal point in Spain, will collaborate with the Spanish Network for Safety and Health at Work (RESST) to host a workshop on (AI) and its role in workplace safety, focusing on both the opportunities and risks.

The first session will explore how Industry 4.0 and 5.0 technologies are impacting occupational safety and health (OSH), particularly and as organisational models. It will also address the rise of hyperconnectivity and its effects on mental health in the workplace.

The second session will offer a platform for social partners, including trade unions and employer organisations, to discuss the effects of digitalisation in the workplace. They will examine strategies for leveraging and other technological advancements while ensuring that OSH standards are upheld.

This workshop is aimed at a diverse audience, including OSH professionals, companies, workers, trade unions representatives and students.

Speakers:

  • Cristina Santamarina, Speaker expert on and Digitalization
  • Aitana Garí, Director of INSST
  • Beñat Landeta, Department of Business Management, Faculty of Engineering of Bilbao, University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU)
  • Begoña Urien Angulo, Deputy Director of the Department of Psychology of the the University of Navarra
  • Jorge Martín González, National Machinery Verification Center, INSST
  • Eva González Menéndez, Researcher from the TR3S-i group and Lecturer, Higher School of Engineering and Technology, International University of La Rioja (UNIR)

AI-based systems can be purely software-based, acting in the virtual world (e.g. voice assistants, image analysis software, search engines, speech and face recognition systems) or AI can be embedded in hardware devices (e.g. advanced robots, autonomous cars, drones or Internet of things applications). It provides the means to automate a large number of worker management tasks (e.g. schedule-making, shift- making and worker monitoring through wearable devices). AI-based worker management involves the intelligence simulation necessary to deal with uncertainty (e.g. providing different outputs based on changes in the environment), whereas algorithmic management is deterministic in nature (i.e. it always provides the same output, given the same input). as organisational models.
