EU-OSHA media partner PuntoSicuro conducted an interview with Dr. Maurizio Curtarelli, Senior Research Project Manager in the Prevention and Research Unit at the Agency. The interview particularly focuses on advanced robotic and -based systems.

In conversation with the media, Dr. Curtarelli highlights key aspects of , providing accessible definitions and classifications for and . He explains that AI refers to systems exhibiting intelligent behaviour by analysing their surroundings and taking autonomous actions to achieve specific goals. AI systems can be software-based, such as voice assistants and facial recognition, or embedded in hardware devices like robots, autonomous cars, and drones.

The expert distinguishes between advanced robots and collaborative robots (cobots). While advanced robots integrate with sophisticated machinery to perform tasks autonomously, cobots are designed to interact with humans and are not fully autonomous; they collaborate with humans in sequential actions or simultaneous cooperation on tasks. The detailed taxonomy helps clarify the varying complexities and interactions of robotic systems in modern workplaces.

Dr. Curtarelli further discusses the benefits of , such as freeing workers from repetitive and dangerous tasks, reducing physical and cognitive workload, and enhancing skill levels through interaction with technology. However, he also addresses potential risks and challenges, including fears of job loss, cognitive overload, and over-reliance on technology.

When inquired about the main takeaways from the published case studies, the researcher reveals that involving workers from the start and ensuring clear communication about new technologies are crucial for successful implementation and acceptance. Additionally, tailoring machines to specific tasks and maintaining a constant flow of information within workplaces are also important.

The interview goes on to note that the next priority area of the campaign will focus on remote and hybrid work, starting in October.
