Health & Safety Review reports on effective digital solutions for workplace safety and health
Knowledge sharing with partners is essential for fostering understanding and promoting best practices in occupational safety and health (OSH). To support this effort, Irish media partner, Health & Safety Review, has shared their articles that detail several case studies illustrating how various sectors have adopted digital tools to enhance workplace safety. They are all linked to the focus of Healthy Workplaces Campaign 2023-25 ‘Safe and healthy work in the digital age’.
One of the noteworthy examples comes from Maynooth University, which has successfully implemented a comprehensive safety software system. This centralised tool streamlines safety and health records and improves the efficiency of chemical risk assessments. The software encompasses various functions, including incident management, hazard reporting, and risk assessments. Training for staff is an integral part of the implementation process to ensure effective use of the new tool.
Another case highlights Mercury, an Irish construction firm, which has introduced digital kiosks for workers to report safety feedback instantly. This initiative empowers workers by giving them a voice to highlight both positive and negative practices, delivering real-time insights to management. This approach enhances communication, reduces paperwork, and the kiosks are positioned strategically on sites to encourage usage in high-traffic areas.
Trinity College Dublin also showcases innovative practices, employing digital tools to enhance safety on its campus. A software tool provided by iProtectU’s compliance software, enables online delivery of trainning, risk assessments and incident management. They have also implemented a separate online chemical inventory system, 'Labcup', which aids in emergency preparedness. Additionally, the college has adopted the 'Safezone' app, which allows users to share their location for added security, especially when lone working. An alert is sent if they fail to check out of the app.
