Connect Europe (formerly ETNO) and UNI Europa ICTS - both partners of the Healthy Workplaces Campaign (HWC) 2023-25 'Safe and healthy work in the digital age', recently hosted the closing conference of the Accelerating Sustainability in Telecoms (AST) project - a joint initiative focusing on the twin transition of digitalisation and green innovation in telecoms.

Throughout its course, the project has examined the impact of emerging technologies such as AI, 5G, and IoT on environmental sustainability, skills needs, and the labour market. At its core, AST has aimed to foster meaningful social dialogue, promote sustainable business practices, and ensure that telecom workers are equipped to thrive amid ongoing transformation.

The conference placed the spotlight on key issues facing the telecom sector, including digitalisation, workforce upskilling, and preparing employees for the rapid adoption of new technologies. Annick Starren, EU-OSHA’s Senior Project Manager, shared insights on the role of social dialogue in enabling the twin transition, emphasising how it can drive both green and digital advancements while keeping workers’ rights and wellbeing at the centre of change.

The programme also featured perspectives from companies, trade unions, and policy experts on critical themes such as skills for the twin transition, embedding sustainability into social dialogue, as well as revealed the AST’s final findings and policy recommendations.

This initiative ultimately forms part of a broader effort to ensure that digitalisation supports not only productivity but also the wellbeing and protection of workers, complementing the HWC’s focus on safe work in the digital era.
