A workshop on the topic organised by our Austrian focal point, Bundesministerium für Arbeit und Wirtschaft, is set to take place soon.  Participants of the workshop will learn about future requirements for labour inspectors such as necessary training and continuous education, the tools and equipment required to support their duties and broader working conditions that will enable them to carry out their roles effectively. The structure of the workshop has been carefully designed to encourage active engagement, with several discussion rounds, providing them with the opportunity to engage and share diverse perspectives. Adding to the depth of the discussions, the workshop will feature a presentation of a study shedding light on new research findings that could influence the direction of labour inspection practices in the future. By the end of the event, participants should leave with a clearer understanding of the evolving demands on labour inspection personnel and with actionable insights that can be applied within their respective organisations and regions. It is changing the way businesses operate and interact with customers. Digitalisation opens up new opportunities for innovative forms of work where people can deliver services through platforms. New business and organisational models, such as the platform economy, are disrupting existing industries and creating new digital labour markets.The most common platform business model is an online marketplace to match supply and demand in the labour market. It often refers to jobs in occupations such as delivery drivers, taxi drivers, cleaners and handymen, but also software developers, data analysts, designers, translators and consultants.  Platform workers are managed by algorithms that influence work allocation and pay; they also collect data on workers that can be used to increase monitoring. Non-standard working relationships with digital platform operators increase the risks for platform workers. They have low bargaining power and weak control over their work. This is particularly evident in delivery and transport activities, where workers are field-based, lower skilled and subject to high levels of platform control. Platform workers also face isolation, higher work intensity, long working hours and digital monitoring and surveillance, all of which can lead to high levels of stress.  In 2021, the European Commission estimated that there are more than 500 digital platforms active in the EU, through which around 28 million people work, of whom around 22.5 million are correctly classified as workers or (most) as self-employed. The remaining 5.5 million are likely to be at risk from misclassification of employment status, even though they work mostly or exclusively for one employer. The number of platform workers is expected to rise to 43 million by 2025. The employment status of platform workers is a major problem, limiting their access to protection. As platform workers are usually self-employed, they are responsible for their own health and safety at work. Platforms argue that they are not obliged to take measures to increase protection for platform workers.  That is why on 24 April 2024, the European Parliament adopted a directive setting out new rules to improve the working conditions of platform workers. The webinar organised by the Slovenian Focal Point will discuss the working conditions of platform workers and will also present the above-mentioned Directive. The Labour Inspectorate of Estonia (Tööinspektsioon) has organised a seminar aiming to equip students with essential knowledge about this topic, highlighting the main challenges they may face and practical strategies to overcome them. From prolonged screen time leading to eye fatigue and repetitive strain injuries to the psychological impact of constant connectivity, the seminar will address these issues, in line with EU-OSHA’s ‘Safe and healthy work in the digital age’ campaign. Experts will provide insights into ergonomic practices, stress management techniques and the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance in a digital setting. Attendees will learn various steps to mitigate these risks and create a safer, more productive work environment. An overview of workers' rights and responsibilities in the digital age will be provided. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of labour relations, including their rights to a safe workplace, the responsibilities of employers and the mechanisms in place to address workplace grievances. The session will cover the fundamentals of OSH regulations, ensuring that students are aware of the protections available to them, as well as the role of the Labour Inspectorate. The seminar will also include a practical session on what can be asked in a job interview related to digital work. This will prepare students for real-world scenarios, helping them understand what employers look for and how to present themselves effectively. Additionally, there will be a competitive game designed to consolidate the knowledge gained throughout the seminar, making the learning process engaging and memorable. As digitalisation continues growing in the world of work, new challenges and risks have emerged, making it important for future employees to understand and navigate these issues effectively. The seminar will look into various of these digital risks. Students will examine how the increase in remote work and digital communication, as well as cybersecurity threats such as phishing, ransomware and data breaches have become major issues. The seminar will educate students on recognising these threats and adopting best practices to safeguard sensitive information. The speakers, experts in different OSH-related fields from the Labour Inspectorate, will also present ergonomic risks linked to prolonged sitting and how to mitigate them in a digital working environment. Psychosocial health concerns will also be a part of the discussion, including digital fatigue and the stress of constant connectivity. The seminar will provide strategies for managing screen time, ensuring a healthy work-life balance and seeking support for mental health issues. In addition to focusing on digital risks, the seminar will provide a brief overview of the Labour Inspectorate.
